Gold Cup 2021 permutations:

Can Mexico keep its title?

El Tri have won four of the last six Gold Cups, including the 2019 edition where they beat the US 1-0 in the final. The USA brought a young squad for this year’s tournament. Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie rested at home for World Cup qualifiers, while Canada waived injured Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David. Costa Rica is also missing goalkeeper Keylor Navas for fitness reasons.

Mexico, meanwhile, has campaigned for this competition, with Tata Martino putting its roster together with the likes of Hirving Lozano, Jesus Corona and Hector Herrera. In theory, they are well positioned to cruise through the tournament and pick up the trophy for the 12th time.

In the opening game, however, Mexico only managed a 0-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago. El Tri attempted 30 shots but hit the net with only seven and couldn’t muster enough clear scoring opportunities on Marvin Phillips goal, despite dominating 83% possession and overtaking Trinidad and Tobago – who had no shot on goal – 695-151.

Even if Mexico followed with a 3-0 win over Guatemala, this shocking result will give Gregg Berhalter’s experimental and young USMNT squad hope that they can actually take on a challenge this year, while Canada and Costa Rica will no doubt be you confident they can cause a shock in the round of 16 against Mexico.
