The Athletic said Sheffield United were given the chance to sign Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira.
What’s the matter?
The Blades will prepare for championship life after being relegated from the Premier League in a frustrating campaign for Bramall Lane believers last season. You are now under the watchful eye of Slavisa Jokanovic and the newly appointed coach will be happy to add to his squad before the summer transfer window ends.
Vieira has reportedly been offered to the championship club, with the midfielder’s future with Sampdoria looking bleak after loaning out to Hellas Verona last season.
The midfielder is under contract with the Genoa club until the summer of 2023, but it remains to be seen whether he will land that deal with Sampdoria following this latest report on his future.
It could be the ideal move for everyone involved
Vieira would be no stranger to championship football having spent three seasons with Leeds United in the second division making it a risk-free signing for Sheffield United this summer.
One could imagine that he feels like he has to prove something at this level too, given that he was a raw talent earlier in his last tenure in the championship with the whites.
This update could also be ideal for Sheffield United as the Blades are seeing a lot of interest in Sander Berge this summer as Napoli, Atalanta, Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa are all interested in signing the 23-year-old Norwegian.
Therefore, the timing of Vieira being offered to Slavisa Jokanovic’s side couldn’t be better and if Berge were to leave the club in the next few months, Vieira could be the ideal replacement for him to move forward.
When comparing their respective performance figures, Vieira and Berge are on par. Vieira’s stats from the 2019/20 season, when he played 27 league games for Sampdoria, have been compared to Berg’s stats from last season 2020/21 and are not dissimilar.
Would Vieira be a good commitment?
Berge won an average of 3.7 duels per game, the same number as Vieira, but the Sampdoria midfielder did it in the duels per game. The 22-year-old averaged 1.2 tackles per game compared to Berges 1.1 in the Premier League last season.
Vieira won an average of 1.5 air duels per game, while Berg’s average of 1.1 per game last season is slightly lower. The Sampdoria man’s average is also superior to Bramall Lane favorite Phil Jagielka, who won 1.3 headers per game in 2020/21.
Financially, the 22-year-old could be the ideal replacement for the Norwegian in the long term. If Sheffield United’s 35 million, which should be good news for the fans of the club.
In other news, Sheffield United delivered a transfer punch over an “incredible” gem that fans may be dejected.
