Fulham: Cottagers want Tommy Doyle

According to Football League World, Fulham are reportedly among the clubs eyeing a move for Manchester City youngster Tommy Doyle.

What’s the matter?

Doyle has been with Manchester City since 2009 and has evolved over the years through the club’s academy system. His impressive performances for the U23 have shown him on a few occasions in the senior squad.

The 19-year-old has made seven A appearances for Pep Guardiola’s first team so far, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll be making a regular appearance for the Premier League champions anytime soon.

Manchester City are reportedly keen to find him out of Etihad Stadium for regular minutes in senior football on a temporary basis and it seems he has no shortage of offers.

West Brom, Sheffield United, QPR, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, Swansea City, Bournemouth, Cardiff City and Coventry City are also believed to be interested in signing Doyle for the midfielder this summer.

Strength in depth could be key

Marco Silva’s side will be looking for promotion to the Premier League for the first time this season and adding strength in depth wouldn’t hurt.

We’ve already seen Harrison Reed being linked with a move to Leeds this summer, and while a formal offer is pending, it’s good to see Fulham are considering other options for the 2021-22 campaign.

Doyle could be an ideal addition to the Cottagers as the youngster looking to make a name for himself in senior football hasn’t gotten much of a chance from Manchester City.

Players hungry to prove themselves in senior football could offer the ideal competition for spots on a team aspiring to advance to the Premier League, and Silva is hoping Doyle could make a positive impact at Craven Cottage this season .

He has done so at the U23 level for City, with nine goals and 15 appearances in 50 appearances indicating his groundbreaking ability – a trait that Fulham has lacked last season. Even if you factor them in at Premier League level, no player made more than four assists for Scott Parker’s team in the 2020/21 season, while only Bobby Decordova-Reid scored more than four goals [Transfermarkt].

Would Doyle be a good signing for Fulham?

No!

Former Manchester City scout Greg Walsh described Doyle as “phenomenal” and “one of the best of his age in Europe” in a 2020 interview with HITC, and it’s hard to disagree with that statement, especially when Manchester City is already he’s given seven first-team appearances so early in his career.

Fulham will know they’ll have to fight for his signature this summer, but competition for Harrison Reed, Tom Cairney and AndrĂ©-Frank Zambo Anguissa will likely be welcome for Silva ahead of the 2021/22 season.

If the newly appointed Fulham manager can fend off numerous other applicants for the Manchester City starlet, it would be an enormous feather in his cap ahead of his first season at Craven Cottage. Shahid Khan must do everything possible to ensure Fulham win the 19-year-old transfer scramble.
