Chelsea have been quietly looking for an opportunity to secure a summer sale for one of their attackers, according to a shocking new report.
The Blues’ 2020/21 season was a two-half season. They stuttered under Frank Lampard and were ninth in the Premier League by the time he was fired. In stark contrast, they became a force to be reckoned with under a new boss Thomas Tuchel.
The German went 14 games without defeat after joining the club. The remarkable turnaround culminated in their Champions League win over Manchester City.
After the season ended on a good note, it’s easy to forget the earlier disappointment with some of the fresh faces they acquired last summer.
Lampard spent a lot of money after previously being restricted by a transfer embargo.
The two most expensive deals for the German couple were Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.
Both were unsuccessful at Stamford Bridge, but it was only fair to give them some time to prepare for the move from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.
Havertz, three years younger than Werner, is probably a little less under pressure than his compatriot.
However, Werner was deployed in the hope of scoring goals for fun, which he failed to achieve. His performances continued to frustrate Blues fans and his serenity in front of goal often let him down.
In fact, it was Havertz who found the winner in the final against City after the former RB Leipzig man had gambled away a huge chance.
And now it seems that his inconsistency has left his position at the club vulnerable. According to Sky Germany, Chelsea asked around if anyone would like to sign him in the transfer window.
The report states that the club is not actively looking for a buyer, but rather for “an opportunity”.
Werner’s sale is not “compulsory” and Tuchel and Co. should still “bet” that the 25-year-old will deliver in the next season.
Werner used as Makeweight
One such opportunity, which they seem appropriate, is to use it in an exchange deal for Erling Haaland.
With Jadon Sancho’s move to Man Utd still one step to go, Chelsea’s pursuit of Haaland is quickly becoming number one in transfer history of the summer.
According to widespread reports, the goal machine will be available for just £ 64 million next summer. This is due to a clause in his contract.
If you wait until then, Chelsea will be forced to compete with players like Man Utd and Real Madrid, hence their desire to pay the odds to secure a move in that window.
Per Football insider, Chelsea offered Werner to take Haaland to Stamford Bridge. They report that Dortmund rejected the proposal.
