Barcelona are considering replacing Renato Sanches if attempts to sign Saul Niguez are unsuccessful.
2016 Golden Boy winner Sanches has revived his career since signing for Lille in 2019, helping Les Dogues to a shocking Ligue 1 title last season. He played a total of 29 games and recorded four assists. However, Christophe Galtier’s team has already started to disband as Boubakary Soumare, Mike Maignan and Galtier himself have already left the club.
According to AS, Sanches could also leave the French this summer. Barcelona view the midfielder as a possible contingency plan if they can’t negotiate a deal for Saul.
It was widely expected that the Atletico midfielder would join Blaugrana this summer to move the highly deserving Antoine Griezmann in the opposite direction. However, these negotiations have been suspended for a few days, which has led Barcelona to consider alternative recruits.
Manager Ronald Koeman is keen to sign a dynamic midfielder for the coming season after missing Georginio Wijnaldum in the eleventh hour on an offer from Paris Saint-Germain.
The only problem is that Barcelona are currently in dire financial straits. Their salary budget is currently not in line with La Liga regulations, which prevents them from registering their signings. Because of this, Sergio Agüero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia are technically not yet members of the roster. This is one of the reasons they are persecuting Saul as getting Griezmann off the payroll is an absolute priority.
If an agreement cannot be reached with Atletico, Sanches could initially enter into a loan agreement with a purchase option at the end of the season. Jorge Mendes – the super agent who represents the player – will play a crucial role in these complex negotiations.
