Crystal Palace’s new manager Patrick Vieira has already embarked on a major overhaul of the first-team squad and now another potential transfer target has been identified.
What’s the matter?
According to CBS, the Eagles have joined a growing list of applicants for Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson. The 21-year-old has been battling for playing time at the Emirates Stadium for the past few seasons, which has sparked speculation about his future.
According to reports, the Eagles have to face competition from Premier League colleagues Brentford and Brighton for Nelson’s signature, as well as several teams in the Bundesliga and the Greek giants Olympiacos.
Since the England U21 international’s contract expires next summer, the Gunners have offered him an extension to be loaned out for 2021/22.
However, no agreement has been reached between the club and the player, meaning Arsenal must sell now or the prospect of losing their academy graduate in 12 months on a free transfer.
Should Palace sign Nelson?
Church must fall
Nelson first came to prominence in the 2018/19 season when he scored eight goals and provided an assist in 31 games for Hoffenheim during a year-long loan with the German team.
Unfortunately for the youngster, he failed to reproduce this type of shape on his return to north London, with the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Willian and Bukayo Saka in the pecking order in front of him.
In 39 appearances in the last two seasons in all competitions, Nelson has only scored six goals and provided another four assists, not the kind of return a striker expects for Arsenal.
Even so, he has shown some glimpse of his quality and potential during his limited time on the pitch and a move to Palace could give him the perfect platform to deliver on his promise.
Despite his unfavorable contract position, Arsenal are expected to charge between £ 15million and £ 20million for the winger and Mikel Arteta’s earlier comments could suggest why the capital’s club rate him so highly.
“We have pace up front with some players. Reiss (Nelson) is a special player and can eliminate players one on one. He’s been out for a while, but now he’s back and he’s shown what he’s capable of, ”said the Spanish tactician after an impressive 2-0 win at the FA Cup in Portsmouth.
It remains to be seen whether Palace will follow suit with an offer for Nelson, but chairman Steve Parish will have to reach for a skilled striker and provide Vieira with a squad that can last into the next season.
And in other news … Palace is in the running to sign a “wonderful” £ 30m wizard, fans will be absolutely delighted
