Leicester City plans to step up contract talks with Youri Tielemans this month due to Liverpool’s interest, The Mail reports.
The 24-year-old had an impressive 2020/21 season for the Füchse, recording six goals and nine assists from 51 appearances.
The Belgian scored a stunning goal to take the club to the FA Cup title but he still hasn’t qualified for the Champions League.
Tielemans is keen to play in elite competition and this has recently sparked speculation about his future with interested Liverpool.
The Foxes have no plans to sell him, and it is reported that they will step up talks on a new long-term deal when he returns from vacation.
Kasper Schmeichel and Jamie Vardy are currently the top earners at £ 100,000 a week. Tielemans could be offered a salary near that number.
Sports lens view:
The Füchse have made good progress under coach Brendan Rodgers, but missed the top 4 on the final day of the last two seasons.
With the signings of Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Ryan Bertrand this month, they have already added more quality to their ranks.
The priority now could be keeping the core of the squad together and Tielemans is definitely one of their top players that they can’t lose.
The midfielder is currently earning £ 33,000 a week and could expect a significant raise if he puts a new long-term contract on paper.
However, a break in contract could completely change the situation and force the Foxes to consider a possible sale this summer.
Valued at £ 49.5m, the star has less than two years on his contract. It could be an ideal time to sell him if he doesn’t want to extend his stay.
