Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the leading contenders for Nicolo Barella’s signing this summer …
What is the word
Spanish outlet Marca claimed that the Inter Milan midfielder is attracting interest from across Europe, particularly Premier League duo Spurs and Liverpool.
They go so far that the English are the frontrunners in pursuit of the 24-year-old sensation.
It is believed that potential bids in the range of £ 60 million (£ 52 million) to £ 70 million (£ 60.5 million) have been discussed, which could dwarf the Lilywhites’ record £ 55 million fee for Tanguy Ndombele .
This is backed by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica which claimed the Serie A champion would only sell for the latter amount.
Lo Celso upgrade
It remains to be seen if Spurs have the finances to generate this much buzz, but Barella would be a real asset to Nuno Espirito Santo heading into the next season.
If there’s any Spurs player who has underperformed since arriving at N17, it could be argued that Giovani Lo Celso is high on that list, especially if he breaks through as a true box-to-box option in the midgield engine room should.
The Inter-Beast would be a significant upgrade in the role, that’s for sure.
On the way to his first Serie A title in 11 years, Barella scored three goals and nine assists from midfield and was one of the most consistent players on both ends of the pitch with an average of 1.6 tackles and 1.3 key passes per game .
By comparison, in the 74 games that Lo Celso has played since arriving from Real Betis to London, he has only provided seven goals and four assists. Barella has probably done better in just one season than the Argentines in two.
Lo Celso also fought for creativity in 2020/21, only making 0.8 key passes per game in the Premier League.
The 29-man Euro 2020 champion has received some glowing endorsements in the past, and perhaps the biggest of them all comes from former Spurs striker Jürgen Klinsmann, who compared Barella to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante.
In quotes from football.london, the German said: “He has the same function as Kante – but the Inter player is in the development phase.”
In addition, the Italian star was also described by the legendary Arrigo Sacchi as a “warrior full of determination” and by the former Cagliari trainer Rolando Maran as “exceptional”.
Barella’s value is valued at £ 58.5million by Transfermarkt and will only increase tenfold after a season in which he won two major trophies on the national and international stage.
Given the evidence above, Paratici could well make a big upgrade for Lo Celso by breaking the club’s transfer record from Spurs.
AND in other news, Paratici could finally replace Eriksen with Spurs, who won a $ 26 million “reveal”.
