Newcastle United have identified Fenerbahce midfielder Irfan Can Kahveci as a possible alternative to Arsenal’s Joe Willock.
The Magpies are keen to bring Joe Willock back to Tyneside after his great short loan last season. Joining Newcastle United in early February, 21-year-old Willock has scored eight goals in 14 appearances and has set Alan Shearer’s long-standing record in seven consecutive games of his last seven appearances.
The 21-year-old midfielder has returned to pre-season training with Arsenal and played in a 2-2 draw with Rangers over the weekend. Newcastle are keen to sign Willock again but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta have dampened the Tyneside club’s hopes for a deal by claiming the England U21 international is part of his plans for the upcoming campaign.
However, with Arsenal unwilling to release Willock, the Magpies are in touch with Fenerbahce midfielder Irfan Can Kahveci and are preparing an offer to sign him.
The 26-year-old Kahveci came to Fenerbahce from Istanbul Basaksehir for € 7 million during the January transfer window, played 12 games and provided two assists. Fenerbahce currently have no plans to sell the Turkey international but that could change if Newcastle come up with an attractive offer.
Steve Bruce needs to improve his squad to fight for a top 10 finish
Newcastle secured a respectable 12the-Positioning of last season in the table, which never looked like this in the first half of the 2020/21 season. After a slow start, Steve Bruce was under enormous pressure and only kept his job when the Magpies took on some form at the end of the season and prevented relegation.
Steve Bruce has a decent squad but to fight for a first-half placement next season he’ll have to make some quality additions in this transfer window. One area the Newcastle boss should prioritize reinforcing is his options in the middle of the park.
The Magpies struggled in central midfield as the two midfielders Bruce used a lot last season – Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden – failed to break teams from below. This required people like Miguel Almiron and Joelinton to dive deep and try to get things done for the Toon Army.
The arrival of Willock in the New Year helped Bruce tremendously as it added a lot of energy and cunning to the Newcastle attack, which looked mostly toothless.
Should Newcastle join Irfan Kahveci?
As Mikel wants Arteta Willock at Arsenal for the upcoming season, Newcastle have turned their attention to Irfan Kahveci.
Kahveci is capable of playing as a central midfielder or further up front as an attacking midfielder or left winger. That kind of versatility might please Bruce, while the Turkish international’s ability to pick a pass and score crucial goals should be a boon to the Magpies.
A player like Kahveci could allow Newcastle strikers to play freely and give Bruce the confidence to use a much more dynamic team. The ex-Istanbul Basaksehir man could bond well with Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Almiron as he adds invention and energy to Newcastle’s game.
With the Toon Army in dire need of creativity and goals for the next season, Bruce needs to make signing an attacking midfielder a priority and Kahveci is spot on.
