Liverpool have reportedly started negotiations with striker Mohamed Salah to renew his contract with the club.
What’s the matter?
According to The Times reporter Paul Joyce, Salah, along with Alisson, Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk, are among the first-team players in talks with the Reds hierarchy.
The Egyptian international’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023, but has occasionally openly toured with the idea of moving to the Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Will Salah sign a new contract?
Fans will be delighted
Since arriving at Merseyside four years ago, the 29-year-old has established himself as one of the best players in the world.
In 203 games for the Anfield team, Salah has scored 125 goals, provided a further 47 assists and guided Jürgen Klopp’s protégés towards the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
And while many of his teammates struggled last season, he was one of the few bright spots for Liverpool who continued to get the ball into the back of the net with alarming regularity.
Therefore, the news that Salah has started talks with the club hierarchy about a possible new deal is sure to delight fans.
Although Alisson, Fabinho and Van Dijk are shown similar feelings because of their world-class skills and importance to the team, their loyalty has never been in question. Accordingly, their willingness to negotiate a new contract is not surprising.
Without Salah’s staggering 31 goals and six assists in all competitions in the 2020/21 season, Liverpool’s extremely disappointing campaign could have been a disaster.
His importance to the 19-time English champion has arguably never been greater, and if he sets new standards in the months ahead, it could be the best deal Klopp gets this summer.
The enigmatic German coach is hoping to return his protégés to the top of English football next season, but that goal would be virtually impossible without his vital attacking power.
It remains to be seen whether Salah will entrust his future to Liverpool – this would put an end to virtually all hopes he has for a move to Madrid or Barca.
