Leeds United are among the many clubs interested in a summer striker for Wolfsburg striker Josip Brekalo.
Josip Brekalo, 23, had an outstanding season at Wolfsburg, scoring seven goals and providing three assistants in 29 Bundesliga games. He was rewarded by manager Zlatko Dalic with a call to the Croatian national team for Euro 2020.
It seems like the 23-year-old winger’s performances for club and country have not gone unnoticed, with Bayern Munich and Napoli also being linked in May. Recently a few more clubs like Inter Milan and Fiorentina have entered the fight but Atletico Madrid remain in pole position for their signature.
Wolfsburg would sanction a sales contract – if the standing clause is worth £ 15.5 million in June 2022. With a price that is well within the budget of the above clubs, the chances of a transfer battle for his signature in the next few weeks are a good few weeks.
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is looking to build on a solid Premier League campaign after the club’s return to the Premier League after 16 long years. The whites secured an admirable ninth place in the table and drew everyone’s attention with their fast, fluid attacking football.
To compete for European spots next season, Bielsa is looking to add some high quality additions to their squad this summer. Earlier this month, Leeds completed signing Barcelona defender Junior Firpo, who was the club’s third signing in the summer transfer window.
Marcelo Bielsa eyes attack reinforcements
The Whites played incredible football under Marcelo Bielsa last season and tore apart teams with a certain authority. They scored 62 goals in 38 games, with players like Patrick Bamford, Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Helder Costa fitting together very well in the final third.
After a solid Premier League debut, Jack Harrison has been signed to Manchester City on a permanent basis and another winger is sure to push Helder Costa towards the exit door on Elland Road.
Costa, who with five goals and eight assists in 46 games was so crucial for Peacock’s promotion to the first division in 2019/2020, was unable to consolidate his place in Bielsa’s starting line-up last season. And with Brekalo on the Yorkshire giants’ radar, the Portuguese winger could be sold if the club gets a good deal.
Josip Brekalo could be an exciting addition for the whites
Leeds’ interest in Josip Brekalo is not surprising given his technical ability and versatility to play on either side. He scored seven goals and three times in 22 league games for Wolfsburg, an impressive return that could continue to improve under the watchful eyes of Bielsa in Leeds.
The Croatian international is someone who can injure teams of great skill and ability in the final third while having the make-up to end chances in the penalty area. In addition to his creative lead, the 23-year-old Bielsa would also offer a certain quality in several areas in the attack third, given his versatility.
Of course, it’s not hard to understand that, given its potential and emerging reputation in the Bundesliga, Leeds see Brekalo as a long-term investment as part of their plans for the future. However, the Whites have tough competition to beat this summer to get a deal over the line for the player.
