Spurs “not ready” to meet asking price for “first choice” Romero

Tottenham are “not ready” to meet Atalanta’s € 40million prize for Cristian Romero’s “first choice” defensive target.

Fabio Paratici was employed as the sporting director for North London after arriving and has made signing at least one new center-back a priority, with Atalanta defender Romero becoming the club’s main target.

The 23-year-old was named the best Serie A defender for the 2020-21 season after impressing on loan for the Italian high-flyers who have the option to sign the Argentine from Juventus.

However, Atalanta is ready to resell the defense attorney immediately – for a much higher fee – after this clause is activated in the loan agreement The athlete report that Spurs are “unwilling” to hit its £ 40 million (£ 34.5 million) valuation.

Barcelona have also been linked to Romero and Spurs have a list of alternative destinations in case a move fails, including Lyon center-back Joachim Andersen, who was on loan at Fulham last season.

Talks have also been held with Bologna on a deal for Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu, who can play either central or full-back, but Spurs is yet to meet their € 17m (£ 14.6m) price tag.

Despite lack of progress on a deal for Romero, Spurs are close to finalizing a deal for the defender’s Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris slated to compete on an initial loan deal with an obligation to make 20 appearances.

Gollini has impressed for Serie A in recent seasons and is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Lloris, who entered the final year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was linked to PSG, only for the Parisians signing Gianluigi Donnarumma instead.

Paratici is said to have used his “good relationship” with Gollini’s agent to close a deal. The goalkeeper’s permanent loan fee is set at 15 million euros (£ 12.9 million).

Talks of a deal for Sevilla winger Bryan Gil have also progressed promisingly, a deal that has signed the youngster for € 25m (£ 21.6m) while Erik Lamela goes in the opposite direction.
