The latest England shirt is perhaps the most talked about and controversial in a generation, or maybe even ever.

Fans, pundits and even the Prime Minister have weighed in on the debate while petitions and radio call in shows were filled with differing opinions. When the kit was launched back in March, some people were outraged at a new update on the back of the shirt.

What was the cause of the controversy exactly? Well, the new home shirt for Gareth Southgate's team caused a ripple across the UK after a «playful update» to the St Georges' Cross on the nape of the shirt which saw the red cross has been replaced with one in navy, light blue and purple colours. While some fans have questioned the change, the FA have stood firm and have explained that the altered colours are a nod to the 'classic colour scheme' of the training gear worn by England's 1966 World Cup-winning team while Nike have expressed similar views, describing the kit in a statement as a design that «disrupts history with a modern take on a classic.

The Mirrorreported that several high-profile figures, including former player turned pundit Chris Sutton, also raised questions about this controversial decision.
