Memphis Depay have revealed their enthusiasm for working with Lionel Messi, calling the Argentina international a “legend” when he was presented in Barcelona.
Barça announced that they signed the Dutchman over a month ago, although they have had to wait until now to reveal their new signing at Camp Nou.
Despite finally getting his hands on a Barcelona shirt, doubts remain about Depay’s participation for Barcelona next season as the club are currently unable to register the Dutch international as he exceeded the La Liga salary cap Has.
Nonetheless, Depay didn’t let that spoil his big moment and discussed a number of issues including the importance of playing for a club like Barcelona and the “dream” of being a team-mate of Messi’s.
Club President Joan Laporta was also in attendance at the unveiling, addressing recent speculation about the future of Antoine Griezmann – a target for at least two Premier League clubs – with the French allegedly on his way out of Camp Nou.
To save you the hassle of filtering through hours of clips on social media, here are the best bits from Depay’s reveal …
“It’s a Dream [to play alongside Messi], “he said (about Barcelona’s official social media Account). “If he goes to all his games he’s a legend. I don’t have to say much. The best player in the world.
“You see what he did at the Copa America so I’m looking forward to playing with him. I think everyone in the world would love to play with a player like him. I had a tour of the museum yesterday and you see he won the whole Ballon d’Ors, and there will probably be another soon. “
“It was a long conversation, but the will was always there,” he said. “I would like to thank the President and my team for all the effort they put into making the deal a reality.
“With all the passion that is in this club, from the board, the fans, the players, the city and also the reporters, everyone here knows about the importance of the club and it is definitely clear to me how big this club is and what impact it has he had.” I have a child.
“To be here now as a 27-year-old and to pursue my dream is great. I’m looking forward to playing in a packed stadium and really looking forward to meeting all the fans. The team is ready for the new season, we’ve recovered well and now it’s time to get back to work and collect trophies.
“[Koeman] had a huge impact. I know him from the national team – he put me in the center forward position and that brought a lot. In the games I’ve played under the coach, I’ve done a lot of things that created opportunities and goals.
“I think he gave me the confidence to play in a different role, he tried me to the middle and it worked. Obviously he made the move to Barcelona and we kept in touch from then on. He did tried to convince me to come last season. ” .
“I think now was the right moment so it was obviously the influence of the coach, but you can’t say no to Barcelona so I would have come anyway.”
“We have no problem with [Griezmann], we are very happy with him, ”remarked Laporta.
“When the market starts to move in a certain direction, we are open to all kinds of suggestions because we are at a very sensitive moment. We have to respect the fair play rules and reduce labor costs.”
