Leif Davis of Leeds sees Bournemouth collapse

Leeds United defender Leif Davis has seen his move to Bournemouth crumble in the last hour.

What’s the matter?

Reports said the eclectic youngster was in advanced talks with the Cherries over a full season loan deal, but that now appears to have fallen dead.

According to Football Insider, a Leeds source has revealed that Davis’s move to the south coast has been unplugged and those involved in the discussions do not expect the talks to resume.

Should Leif Davis be loaned out?

It is added that “Marcelo Bielsa was interested in Davis having regular senior game experience rather than playing a small role in Leeds.”

Bielsa will be frustrated

The 21-year-old only had a quick look at the first team last season, only played 31 minutes of football in the top division and was mostly in the U23.

But according to comments previously made by Phil Hay of The Athletic, Davis is someone the Thorp Arch coaching team rated highly, saying, “He’s very well thought, is Davis, and he’s been since his arrival and the Under came -23er, he was really as committed as most of Bielsa’s and was often the main player when Bielsa needed a left-back.

“The bottom line is that they think a lot of Davis at Leeds and think he’s a steal for what they paid to sign him from Morecambe.”

Davis can play as a left-back as well as a center-back and has the versatility to jump in wherever Bielsa needs him who can play from behind.

But as Football Insider says of Bielsa’s thoughts on the matter, the bottom line for Davis’ long-term development is that he plays in the first team week after week, which he likely won’t have on Elland Road after Junior Firpo arrives.

A loan to the league and with a side like Bournemouth who are sure to fight for promotion again would have done the young defender well and he would have returned to Yorkshire as a better player for the experience.

Instead, he faces the prospect of being back on the sidelines as someone who may have outgrown U23 football but is not yet fully operational at Premier League level.

This is exactly why Bielsa will be frustrated and even angry that this step has now failed.
