Tottenham have agreed personal terms with Atalanta defender Cristian Romero but a breakthrough remains to be found in negotiations with the Serie A team.
Newly appointed Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo has identified central defense as an area he would likely bolster and it has been rumored that Davinson Sanchez could be signed with mega-money to take on a new face.
Romero has become one of Tottenham’s top targets – keeping newly installed football director Fabio Paratici extremely busy in his first few weeks on the job – and this has been claimed by the Argentine news agency TyC Sport that an offer of € 40m (£ 34.1m) plus € 10m (£ 8.5m) of add-ons has now been made.
Atalanta’s reaction to the alleged offer is still unknown, however Fabrizio Romano added that personal terms have already been agreed with the 23-year-old. It is believed that a five-year contract has been signed with a term ending in 2026, which is likely to include a record salary increase for Romero.
The Argentine defender is technically still a Juventus player who only moved to Atalanta on a temporary basis. However, his two-year move included the option for La Dea to make the deal permanent at any time for a fixed fee of 16 million euros (£ 13.8 million).
With Atalanta almost certainly preparing to trigger this clause, they could very well sign and sell the defender on the very same day – not to mention the fact that they’ll make a handsome profit on it.
Spurs are also nearing signing another Atalanta player after securing a loan deal for goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. The Italian is expected to challenge Hugo Lloris for first place on the grid and thus endanger the decade-long stranglehold of the World Cup winner.
There is also progress on a deal for young Spanish prospect Bryan Gil. Tottenham are set to pay Seville 25 million euros (£ 21.7 million) plus surcharges for the 20-year-old, which also sends Erik Lamela in the other direction.
More departures from Tottenham’s squad are expected in the coming weeks, including fringe defender Cameron Carter-Vickers – the 90min Understand is of interest to Newcastle and Celtic.
