Mason Greenwood calls “surprising” the toughest opponent he has ever met

Manchester United prodigy Mason Greenwood has named the toughest opponent he has faced in his short career to date – and the choice may surprise you.

The 19-year-old Greenwood fought with Liverpool’s new center-back Ibrahima Konate, Roma’s Leonardo Spinazzola in the Europa League and with the likes of Andrew Robertson, Ben Chilwell and Lucas Digne in the Premier League during a Champions League game against RB Leipzig.

However, youthful England international Joe Bryan chose Greenwood’s words “you know, the one for Fulham” as his toughest challenge. The recently relegated left-back faced the Man Utd center-forward twice last season and scored in the penultimate game in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old Bristolian was indeed the man who secured promotion for Fulham in 2019/20, scoring a brace in extra time against Brentford in the play-off final to win the Wembley showpiece for Scott Parker’s men, including a 40-meter free kick to outsmart David Raya.

As Greenwood prepares for a new season in the Premier League, he will be relieved that Bryan is no longer in the league having referred to the attacking full-back as his brand.toughest challenge ”.

Greenwood told Man Utds official website: “That’s a good question. I probably have to say it might be surprising, but you know? [Joe] Bryan who for Fulham?

“He left me no room, no time on the ball when we played at home and away. It was one of my toughest games for us.

“He’s one you probably wouldn’t believe I would say his name, but he got close to me and didn’t leave me much room. He was a good defender and he was probably my toughest challenge. “

Greenwood versus Bryan

The duo first met at Craven Cottage in mid-January, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were entering into a hesitant affair in which Fulham took a 1-0 lead thanks to Ademola Lookman before goals from Edinson Cavani and a miracle stroke from Paul Pogba scooped up three points.

In this match, Greenwood, who started as a striker on the right, couldn’t play a single chance and only scored one shot, while Bryan won possession six times in the defensive third, most of the players on both sides.

In the second leg, when Fulham’s relegation fate had already been decided, Bryan was actually on the scorers list 15 minutes before the end to compensate for Cavani’s great long-range shot. Again Bryan won six ball possession in the defensive third, which was only surpassed by Victor Lindelof (seven).

Greenwood, meanwhile, fared slightly better, with three shots this time despite only one striking and missing a “big chance” while completing two of his three attacks, though the 1-1 draw serves well to illustrate frustration that day for the hosts – and especially for the goalless Greenwood.
