A picturesque, sun-drenched Grödig formed the backdrop for Liverpool in their most recent pre-season friendly, which ended with a single goal and many snapshots.
Jürgen Klopp’s men traveled from their base in Saalfelden to compete against Mainz in front of 3,500 mainly red fans.
The matchup was the first 90-minute game before the new season, but traditionally it was two different XIs that hit the field in both halves.
The first was the strongest XI, with Harvey Elliott and Ibrahima Konate still fresh blood on a team littered with Klopp’s regulars.
And Liverpool’s new No. 5 impressed on and off the ball, a physical unit with speed and presence – you couldn’t ask for more!
There were positive signals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who seem energetic and lively after their urgently needed summer break.
But it would be a Luca Kilian own goal that would give Liverpool a late lead and Owen Beck provided the crucial ball that forced the mistake.
How great it is to see fans in the stadium, something that will never go unnoticed!
And it was thumbs up and high fives from Klopp when he saw his team in action.
An interested spectator in Virgil van Dijk watched. We know it won’t come on Thursday, but hopefully it won’t be long before we see him back on the pitch!
Liverpool’s pre-season schedule will continue next week before they face Hertha Berlin on Thursday night before returning to Merseyside for two friendly matches at Anfield.
