There could be a pre-season showdown between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Juventus confirmed as Barcelona’s opponents in the Joan Gamper Trophy in August.
The game takes place annually in August and has put Barça up against the biggest teams in the world. Previous competitors include Arsenal, Boca Juniors, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
This summer’s showdown will reunite two football icons of all time who previously fought in La Liga during Ronaldo’s stint at Real Madrid.
It is also the first time that Barcelona Femení have participated. Both games will take place on Sunday, August 8th. At the Games, fans will return to Camp Nou for the first time since coronavirus restrictions were in place, despite Barça confirming the stadium will only be 20 percent full.
The two teams faced each other in a 2005 Joan Gamper Trophy match in which Andres Iniesta, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet all met before Juve triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
Messi and Ronaldo were both busy over the summer. Messi led Argentina to their first Copa America title since 1993, their first major international honor, while Ronaldo appeared for Portugal at Euro 2020 when the Selecao were eliminated in the round of 16 despite winning the Golden Boot.
Although they were still active on the pitch, the future of the two players is still somewhat uncertain.
While Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Lionel Messi on a new contract that includes a 50 percent pay cut for the 34-year-old, the deal has yet to be officially announced. The club’s financial problems did not help.
On the other hand, Ronaldo is expected to stay with Juve despite rumors about his future.
