They always expect the squad to get injured occasionally during the season, but it’s hard to imagine something like Liverpool last season as their center-backs were all out with long-term injuries.
That meant they couldn’t hold a full title defense, but there is a lot of optimism that they will return to normal in the coming season.
Sky Sports has reported on Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’s fitness, but it makes sense that Jürgen Klopp plays it safe and doesn’t take the risk of pushing them back:
“It would still be a surprise [if they played against Hertha], Unfortunately. You look really good. But look, they do everything, they play football, we do what we can, they don’t do too much, we just have to be patient. We’re preparing for a full season, not a pre-season game.
“I’m not going to risk it for a game here. We still have a lot of games to go but I don’t see them involved in the next one.
There is a huge difference between regaining general fitness and reaching a point where you are physically and mentally strong enough to deal with whatever a game of top football throws at you.
There is good news they seem close to a return and the inclusion of Ibrahima Konate also gives Klopp more time if he can settle in quickly, but it looks like they should be back soon.
