Arsenal are growing in confidence that a deal for Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli could get stuck this summer even after putting his heart on a move to Juventus.
Manuel Locatelli, 23, played an important role in Italy’s progress in the Euro 2020 final, where Roberto Mancini’s side will face England at Wembley on Sunday. The midfielder took a brace in the group stage and while joining and leaving Mancini’s team, he has built his reputation as one of the stars of Euro 2020.
While Juventus lead the way in signing the Italian international, there is apparently still hope for Arsenal. The Old Lady is expected to try to close a deal with Sassuolo despite being financially affected after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Arsenal remain in the mix for the Sassuolo midfielder, with Mikel Arteta’s side likely waiting for Juventus’ next move before making an official offer.
Arsenal signs Nuno Tavares; shortly before an agreement with Albert Sambi Lokonga
The Gunners have confirmed the signing of Nuno Tavares from Benfica, making it the club’s first signing in north London this summer.
The 21-year-old Tavares made 30 appearances for Benfica before agreeing to join Arteta’s side. He was signed to replace Scotland’s left-back Kieran Tierney, who had an injury-ridden 2020/21 season at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are also on the verge of reaching an agreement with Belgian club Anderlecht to sign Albert Sambi Lokonga. In the last two seasons, the 21-year-old midfielder has made 50 appearances in the Jupiler League first team. He became a firm favorite of Anderlecht coach Vincent Kompany but has now decided to leave Belgium for Premier League football.
What other business did the Gunners do?
It turns out to be a busy summer transfer window for the North London team as Mikel Arteta seeks to change the club’s fortunes after missing out on European qualifiers.
Arsenal have allowed midfielder Matteo Guendouzi to move to Ligue 1 club Marseille for a season with the obligation to buy next summer. Defender William Saliba will follow Guendouzi to Marseille on loan to France for the second straight season.
Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has also been loaned to VFB Stuttgart, with Arsenal chasing Brighton and Hove Albion center-back Ben White this summer.
Arsenal already lost two midfielders in Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard at the beginning of the summer and are now preparing to sell Granit Xhaka to AS Roma. Xhaka’s potential exit will leave a huge void at Emirates Stadium to fill.
Arsenal are working on the transfer of Manuel Locatelli
After adding Albert Sambi Lokonga to his midfield, Arteta has been working hard to sign Manuel Locatelli from Sassuolo.
Locatelli repeated their good form in Serie A with Italy at Euro 2020. The 23 year old is a fantastic passer with decent tackle skills and can handle the hustle and bustle of Premier League football. The Italian international also has a knack for arriving late in the box to score goals.
Given his ability to set the pace of the game, the former AC Milan man could complement the hard-working Thomas Partey in Arsenal’s engine room. If Arsenal somehow manage to close a deal for Locatelli, it would be a statement from Arteta’s club.
