Barcelona appear to have received a huge boost in Lionel Messi’s signing as La Liga have reportedly cleared him up for registration.
Messi is officially a free agent this summer and his contract with Barcelona will expire before the club and the player can agree on a new deal.
It comes a year after Messi filed a transfer request with the club in disarray, only to learn from La Liga that the € 700m release clause in his contract was still in place. Messi made 47 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions in the 2020/21 season, scoring 38 goals and adding another 12 assists.
Despite again failing in the Champions League and finishing third in La Liga, Barcelona still managed to inspire his side to the Copa del Rey glory, scoring twice in the 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the final.
But while away at Copa America, Messi scored four goals and provided five assists to lead Argentina to victory in the first Copa for the first time in his career La Albiceleste in 28 years Barcelona fell apart.

While Barcelona used the summer to recruit players like Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Emerson Royal; they could not officially register them for financial reasons. Jean-Clair Todibo, Konrad de la Fuente, Junior Firpo and Matheus Fernandes have all been permanently transferred, but Barcelona have more to do.
Unfortunately for Barcelona, the financial troubles also affected Messi, with the Argentina allegedly the highest paid player in world football, earning £ 500,000 a week. La Liga president Javier Tebas admitted it would be impossible for Barcelona or any other club to sign Messi with his current salary.
“He will not be able to sign on the same terms as the previous contract,” said Tebas.
“That would be impossible, but I also believe that no European club can pay that amount in their previous contract, not just Barcelona.”
Tebas also insists that he will not allow Barcelona to circumvent or bend the rules of La Liga financial fair play to ensure Messi’s renewal, saying no, I will not. [turn a blind eye] it’s impossible for Messi, ”said Marca.
However, according to AS, Barcelona have received permission to register Messi from La Liga, with the deal set to be announced once the club have resolved their salary problem.
Why Barcelona can’t register their signings yet
Why can’t Barcelona register their signings? Well the Blaugrana have exceeded the La Liga salary cap, which was introduced to prevent clubs from going into debt in the league, especially in the current climate.
However, Tebas has admitted that Barcelona have always played close to the limit, so when it was tightened due to the pandemic, they were unable to comply – which caused the ongoing problem.
And he also warned Barcelona that they will not be able to register players if they fail to comply with the rules, despite expecting them to correct the situation.

“Our regulations are sufficient. It’s just a real situation with the pandemic that there is less revenue and more losses, ”added Tebas.
“Opening up the situation would only create more debt. We have dealt intensively with it and think that the regulation is acceptable and that all clubs should adhere to it. All clubs have agreed to this regulation themselves.
“It is not the first time in recent years that this has happened when a club signs a player but cannot register the player. I’m sure Barcelona will sort this out but if not they won’t be able to register the players.
“The big difference between Barcelona and the pandemic is that they have always been on the wage limit. When the pandemic surfaced, they didn’t have that buffer so they wouldn’t be affected by this squad limit issue.

“No other club has reached this absolute limit. They have lost 350 million euros in income since the pandemic, which is why it is not really normal in our league in particular to push the salary limit to the last euro.
“If they have to terminate contracts, it may be cheaper than the money they pay for their wages. I think you are on the right track.
“I’ve talked to some of their players who know they won’t be considered for next year and want to leave. Getting exempt from a contract sometimes means a fine. “
