Paris Saint Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has spoken to manager Mauricio Pochettino to inform him of his plan to let his contract expire.
Mbappe has entered the last 12 months of his contract what long-time Real Madrid contenders have been waiting for. They plan to make an offer for the Frenchman but PSG continue to insist that Mbappe is not for sale.
President Nasser Al-Khelaifi has said Mbappe will “never be sold” or go on a free transfer, but that was before the 22-year-old informed him of his refusal to sign a deal. Mbappe has warned Al-Khelaifi that he will be leaving the club at some point in the next 12 months.
After those showdown talks with Al-Khelaifi, Mbappe went on vacation, at which point PSG hoped he would change his mind. However, according to Marca, the record remains the same.
In his pre-season meeting with Pochettino, Mbappe made it clear that he will not be with the club for the 2022-23 season and would accept a transfer if one arrived.
Mbappe has also promised not to cause a problem for PSG or Pochettino and he doesn’t want to force a transfer from Parc des Princes – despite Real’s subtle nudges in that direction.
Just like at Eden Hazard in 2019, Real have tried behind the scenes to convince Mbappe to push for an exit but they keep everything low for fear of ruining the relationship between the two clubs.
In Real’s dream world, Mbappe would call for a transfer and Los Blancos could step in with an offer to save the day, giving PSG the opportunity to capitalize on an asset that threatens to go for free. How heroic of them.
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. Mbappe won’t burn down his bridge at PSG so he’ll have to wait another 12 months to seal his long-awaited move to Real Madrid unless the French side stirs.
