With Cristian Romero about to join Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, Atalanta has identified with three defenders as the Argentines’ successors.
The 23-year-old had a stellar campaign at La Dea helping them qualify for the Champions League for the third season in a row, and he also played for Argentina in their recent Copa America triumph.
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini would rather replace Romero with Juventus center-back Merih Demiral, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The Turkey international had a disappointing Euro 2020 but the Orobici tactician is still evaluating his skills.
Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was also interesting for Tottenham before turning to the Argentina international, but the Japan international could instead be Romero’s heir at La Dea.
Atalanta have also sought out an outside Serie A defender to replace the 23-year-old. The Dutch starlet Sven Botman played for the French club Lille and played 37 games for the Ligue 1 champions in 2020/21.
