Exclusive talk with Football FanCast, Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer believes his old side will find it difficult to sign a goalkeeper who is ready to challenge number 1 Illan Meslier.
Leeds need a new defender after Kiko Casilla’s move to La Liga team Elche.
Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman is said to be top of the club’s list but the 24-year-old has turned down a move to Elland Road, according to Football Insider.
Can Meslier be ousted?
The outlet says Woodman has no interest in playing second fiddle after Meslier, forcing Leeds to look elsewhere.
Palmer now fears the Whites could end up with a # 2 happy to just sit on the bench rather than a goalkeeper willing to push Meslier and give the French real competition.
“It’s a difficult situation” Palmer said in response to Woodman’s reported snub. “YWhere Whose want a goalkeeper that comes and that makes you happy – and I know goalkeepers who like to do that – just sitting on the bench and not playing.
“Unfortunately, when you’re looking for a goalkeeper, that’s the scenario you start with.”
Meslier only missed three Premier League games last season, so some goalkeepers will understandably be reluctant to move to Elland Road where they are likely to see very little action. However, that does not seem to be the case with Kristoffer Klaesson, who is now said to be Leeds.
