Race for the Playmaker Award

The 2021/22 Premier League season is less than a month away, which means it won’t be long before players like Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Kane begin their battle for the Playmaker Award.

The Playmaker Award, in case you didn’t already know, is given to the player with the most assists in the Premier League campaign, first given in 2017/18 and won by Kevin De Bruyne with 16 assists. De Bruyne won again in 2019/20 with 20 assists, making him the only player to have won it twice so far, but not before his Belgian compatriot Eden Hazard took it in 2018/19 (15 assists).

Tottenham striker Kane is the current Playmaker Award holder after making 14 assists last season to come up with his 23 Golden Shoe goals. Kane finished two assists ahead of De Bruyne and Bruno Fernandes, despite the Man City midfielder’s 12 coming in just 2,001 minutes (over 1,000 fewer than his other top three players).

Jack Grealish and Son-Heung-min completed the top 5 as the only other players to score at least 10 assists in the Premier League last season, with the former doing so in just 2,184 minutes as an injury shortened his campaign.

Raphinha, Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford (all nine), Pascal Groß and Timo Werner (both eight) complete the top 10 of the Premier League templates, but the latter also include Aaron Cresswell and Jack Harrison.

The competition for the Playmaker Award was already fierce, but was intensified by Manchester United’s signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, who scored at least 10 assists in each of his last three Bundesliga seasons. Then there’s the return of Emiliano Buendia, who signed for Aston Villa after making 16 assists in the league last season and seven in his previous Premier League season with Norwich City.

In the course of the 2021/22 campaign, keep an eye on the top 10 assistant guides below.
