Leeds United goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson says he still can’t believe the Premier League club signed him this summer.
The whites signed a four-year contract with the 20-year-old this summer after Kiko Casilla left. The Spaniard survived a tough run on Elland Road and felt a loan change to Elche would be good for him. However, with Klaesson as a backup, they have gone a proven track.
Current number one Illan Meslier signed with a similar original order. However, the French got his chance after Casilla’s eight-game doping ban in 2019/20.
He hasn’t looked back since then and is only a year older than his deputy. However, Klaesson has admitted that he didn’t expect to be on Elland Road this season.
“No, that’s still a bit unreal, I have to admit that,” said the goalkeeper Dagsavisen (above Sports witnesses).
“It is very nice that Leeds dared to do it [to do] that to bet on me. “
Klaesson joined the team of Marcelo Bielsa from Valerenga in Norway’s first division.
He insisted that clubs around the world should learn from their approach and trust in him.
“It may be wrong for me to say that, but I see it as an inspiration for other clubs that give young goalkeepers a chance,” he said.
“[Manager] Dag-eilev Fagermo should have a lot of praise for that. “
Leeds’ Klaesson is grateful for opportunities
“Valerenga left me standing and couldn’t get a 30-year-old to sit me on the bench. I hope other clubs learn from it, ”he added.
“It is wrong to say that this does not affect you [mistakes].
“But you get a little thicker skin and I’ve learned very well from the mistakes I’ve made.”
Klaesson hasn’t had his chance in the Premier League yet, but has sat on the bench in all three Premier League games so far this season.
He has now played four Premier League 2 games for the club’s U23s.
