According to Hasan Salihamidzic, Serge Gnabry will “probably” miss the Champions League opening match between Bayern Munich and Barcelona on Tuesday.
In Bayern’s 4-1 win at RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Gnabry had to withdraw in stoppage time in the first half due to back problems.
The 26-year-old started in two of the three German World Cup qualifiers during the international break and was substituted on in the second half.
Salihamidzic was frustrated that Gnabry sustained an injury after all these games, while Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus left early with a knee injury but recovered in time to face Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend.
Reus withdrew from the selection for Euro 2020, but had said that he wanted to play “an important role” for Germany before the three qualifying matches.
“I find it surprising when you leave the national team and then play again a few days later. Our players stay and play anyway, ”Salihamidzic told Sky.
“It’s not the first time either. If you’re injured, you get out, but otherwise … Serge Gnabry stayed there. He’s likely to be out against Barcelona now, but that’s the way it is.

“If you want to be a leader, you always have to be there. Otherwise a team won’t work. What [Joshua] Kimmich is doing something [Manuel] New does what [Leon] Goretzka does that – for me that is leadership. The trainer can rely on that. ”
On Gnabry’s availability against Barcelona, he added: “It’s going to be really close. He’s been treated and it’s already better. I was there today and saw him. We have to see if it’s enough. ”
However, Bayern could be strengthened by Kingsley Coman’s return to fitness.
Coman retired from service in France with a calf injury and reportedly returned to training in Bavaria on Sunday.
Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann is also confident of having Robert Lewandowski to choose from after the striker’s early withdrawal from Leipzig for “precautionary reasons”.
