Liverpool is considering a change for the OGC Nice starlet Amine Gouiri at the direct appeal of coach Jürgen Klopp.
Amine Gouiri (21), a youth product from the famous Lyon Academy, only made 15 appearances in the first team before leaving the club for OGC Nice in July 2020. The French U21 international had a solid debut season at OGC Nice, recording 16 goals and eight assists in 41 appearances. And he started the new Ligue 1 season in top form with four goals and an assist in four games.
Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp is a great admirer of Gouiri and would like to sign him as a long-term replacement for Roberto Firmino, whose form has deteriorated massively in recent seasons.
The 29-year-old Firmino, who has been a key cog in Jürgen Klopp’s system for several years, has contributed to 18 goals and 15 assists in 74 Premier League games in the last two seasons. He scored a goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Norwich City on the first weekend but was sent off shortly before half-time in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Anfield Road with a hamstring injury.
The Brazilian international has lost his starting XI to Diogo Jota following his lack of productivity since the turn of the year and there is no timeline for his return to full fitness after a hamstring problem.
Liverpool’s lack of strength in depth
Liverpool lost Georginio Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and sold Xherdan Shaqiri to Lyon during the summer transfer window. But they failed to replace both players in the summer, which weakened Klopp’s starting XI and the depth of the squad.
With Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, the Merseysiders could only sign one player. Given how Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have strengthened their squads in the most recent transfer window, Klopp should definitely aim to add some additions to his Liverpool squad in the New Year to realistically fight for the Premier League title .
Amine Gouiri could be a smart long-term investment for the Reds
To this end, Jürgen Klopp’s interest in signing striker Amine Gouiri from Nice makes perfect sense.
Gouiri is one of the most promising young talents in French football and his performances on the Allianz Riviera have caught Liverpool’s attention. The youngster is a versatile customer as he can act as a left winger as well as a center forward. While the Frenchman has been used as number 9 by manager Christophe Galtier this season, he has done really well.
The 21-year-old can certainly improve his qualities further and he can reach even greater heights with Liverpool if he makes the right decisions. Under the guidance of Klopp, he can sharpen his skills and develop his true potential in the future.
However, Gouiri would initially have to be content with a partial role should a move to Anfield arise in the near future, with Salah, Mane and Jota likely to keep their status as Klopp’s undisputed starters at the top. Once he gets used to the rigors of Premier League football, the young French striker could become a top player in Liverpool.
