Manchester United were overwhelmed by a 2-1 stoppage-time loss to Young Boys after a disastrous pass from Jesse Lingard gave Theoson Siebatcheu a one-on-one to complete a fantastic comeback for David Wagner’s men .
Ronaldo would have made Casillas’ all-time appearance in the history of the competition, but the celebration was overshadowed by a determined Young Boys squad who brought United their first loss of the 2021-2022 season.
Manchester United got off to a good start at the Wankdorf Stadium in Switzerland and Ronaldo gave the “Red Devils” the lead within the first 15 minutes on his second debut for United in the Champions League.
Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball on the left and his sweet pass with the outside of the foot allowed Ronaldo to shoot into the house from close range and put the visitors in front after 13 minutes.
Ronaldo’s goal gave United the lead very early on in the game, but after the Red Devils were reduced to ten men after poor contact with the ball that resulted in him going over the ball and heavy on Young Boys’ Christopher Martins, referee Francois Letexier showed that British people quickly get a red card internationally.
David Wagner’s men took control of the game after the red card when they pushed for an equalizer. Meanwhile, United’s defense remained resilient, forcing the Young Boys to resort to long balls.
Manchester United resistance, however, was broken midway through the second half when Moumi Ngamaleu stuck a toe out after a hefty delivery and passed the ball past a helpless de Gea to level the hosts.
In the final stages, the record breaking Ronaldo came on as the Old Trafford side battled for a point, with the Young Boys stepping up the pressure.
The ongoing pressure paid off in the latter stages when a howler from Jesse Lingard allowed Theoson Siebatcheu to walk through and comfortably push himself home, which only gave the Young Boys their second win against English opponents.
