Paris Saint-Germain have called for Real Madrid to be “punished” for their supposedly disrespectful pursuit of Kylian Mbappe amid ongoing speculation about the Frenchman’s future.
Ligue 1 giants are apparently upset by Madrid’s very public approach to their young starlet over the summer, with the La Liga side – and club president Florentino Perez – longstanding admirers of the world champions.
That admiration reportedly sparked concrete interest in the summer when PSG received and declined a handful of offers from their European rivals, including a deadline day offer of around € 200m.
The Spaniards’ hopes for signing the 22-year-old had been sparked by his current refusal to renew his existing contract, which means he may now be able to leave the Parc des Princes for free at the end of the season with Los Blancos January can sign a preliminary contract.
With the former Monaco man potentially free next summer, some have wondered why Maurico Pochettino’s side would turn down such mega-money offers amid Madrid’s decision to make a substantial offer for a player to sign A free agent gives a question mark in less than 12 months.
As Mbappe himself recently revealed, he had asked to leave his current club earlier this summer to join the Bernabeu and was keen to get a transfer fee for the Parisians instead of leaving for free next year.
As it is, he will remain a PSG player for at least the next few months, with the club apparently still firmly convinced that he will stay where he is for the foreseeable future.
The club’s sporting director Leonardo has now fought his way into pursuit of the striker in Madrid, insisting that they should be “punished” for showing “disrespect”, albeit with a sense of irony after the very public The club’s charm offensive last season against Lionel Messi.
“They are contesting from Madrid but I think Real Madrid did a job buying Mbappe” [as a free agent] for a long time, “Leonardo told the Festival dello Sport. “You’ve been talking publicly about Mbappe for two years. This must be punished.
“At Real Madrid, I see a lack of respect for Mbappe. He’s not a normal player, he’s one of the best in the world. The manager, the board of directors, the Real players talked about Kylian … I think it’s part of their plan. Not respectful. “
The Brazilian continued to reiterate his belief that despite the current uncertainty, the club can tie their “jewel” to a new deal.
He added: “Our idea is to renew Kylian Mbappe’s contract. Nothing has changed in our plans. Kylian is a gem, he is incredibly perfect for PSG … then we have Kylian, Leo (Messi), (Neymar). We never planned PSG’s future without Mbappe.
