An update on Newcastle’s interest in their services has surfaced via Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling.
What is the talk?
Newcastle’s new owners, PIF, are looking to sign a “Star” for the January transfer window to reign their reign on Tyneside in style, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The report names a number of players the club are considering including Manchester City and England striker Sterling, who stood out for his country at the European Championships this summer.
Should Newcastle sign Sterling?
Fans would love it
Newcastle fans would surely love it if PIF signed Sterling as their first signing at St James’ Park in January as he is a proven, high-profile local talent.
Sterling was one of the leading minds in England on the way to the European Championship final. He scored three goals and one assist in seven starts, including a crucial knockout goal against Germany that could instantly make him popular with Newcastle’s English fans.
The ex-Liverpool man is also a seasoned Premier League artist. In 297 top division games, Sterling has scored 97 goals and provided 72 assists, while he has scored over 100 goals in all competitions for Manchester City.
Former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard praised Sterling during the Euro and hailed him as a great example for young players. He said:
“He’s excellent, I love him as a player. He’s gone down in form and he admits it, but what we’re seeing now is the player we’ve seen for the past three years.
“Now when I talk to a young would-be winger who wants to play, he’s a role model on and off the pitch. He’s had tough times, but now he’s got through them and looks like a man. He’s just a world class player. “
This suggests the £ 200,000-a-week dynamo might be the perfect man to overwrite PIF’s first transfer window at the club. Over the years he has not only proven himself to be an excellent top player, but is also a role model for other players with his commitment on and off the pitch.
Newcastle fans would certainly love to have a well-respected, proven English striker to be the figurehead of their new era under PIF as it has a positive, fresh image. You’d also enjoy watching Sterling run down the wing alongside Allan Saint-Maximin every week, delivering goals and assists, which is what ultimately is most important.
