Liverpool are among the top clubs in the Premier League tied to a move from Club Brugge’s highly rated striker Charles De Ketelaere.
After climbing the junior ranks of the Club Brugge academy, Charles De Ketelaere, 20, stormed onto the stage last season, scoring five goals and providing eight assists in 46 games in all formats. The youngster was named the best young player of the year in the Belgian Pro League after his success at Club Brugge.
The versatile Belgian has brought the form last season into this season, scoring four goals and two assists in 10 Belgian Pro League games so far. De Ketelaere drew attention to himself with his performance in Club Bruges’ 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the group game of the Champions League.
The 20-year-old’s meteoric surge and rapid development has drawn the attention of many top Premier League clubs, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal vying for the talented striker’s signature next year.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have done very well so far in the new Premier League season and are ready to face a serious title challenge. The return of defenders Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip after long-term injuries and the return of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota have given Jurgen Klopp’s side a great opportunity to recapture the Premier League title from Manchester City.
Liverpool’s lack of depth could haunt them in the title race
What Liverpool lacks compared to Manchester City is the strength in the squad depth. As seen last season, there were a few injuries here and there and the Reds lost their balance and humbly surrendered the championship title to Manchester City.
Jürgen Klopp certainly cannot afford to make the same mistake again and after spending only on one defender in the summer transfer window, he will have to convince the board to spend a lot of money in January. In addition, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are leaving for the Africa Cup in January, would only justify Klopp’s calls to reinforce the squad.
Charles De Ketelaere could be an excellent addition to the Reds
Charles De Ketelaere, one of the highest rated young talents in European football, would add quality and depth to an exciting Liverpool attack. He has starred for Club Bruges this season but is more than capable of operating far in the hole behind the main striker and in central midfield and such versatility will only please Klopp.
The Belgian international with two caps is a great talent and could potentially take his chance to impress at Anfield immediately after Salah and Mane left AFCON. A move from De Ketelaere in January would be a big boost for Klopp, who needs a bigger squad to challenge on all trophy fronts. Plus, the 20-year-old could also be a handy option on the bench.
However, with De Ketelaere under contract in Bruges until 2024 and attracting the interest of some of the best clubs in Europe, Liverpool would have to pay a substantial fee to get the Belgian champions to sell their prized asset mid-season.
