Portugal defeated Luxembourg 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Algarve on Tuesday evening.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the goal in the eighth minute with a penalty before he scored the 2-0 in the 13th minute after another penalty. Bruno Fernandes made it 3-0 after five minutes and gave Portugal a respite.
João Palhinha scored the fourth goal for Portugal in the second half before Ronaldo completed his hat-trick three minutes before half-time.
In the other game in Group A, Serbia beat Azerbaijan 3-1 to take them to the top of the group.
In Group B, Georgia scored a 2-1 win over Kosovo, with Zuriko Davitashvili taking the 82nd place winner.
Elsewhere, Sweden defeated ten-man Greece and took the lead with 15 points.
