Gregory van der Wiel: Playing for PSG got me fed up with football

Former Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel has admitted he’s “fed up with football” after dropping the pecking order at Parc des Princes.

The 33-year-old Dutchman spent four years in the French capital after moving from Ajax in 2012, winning 12 trophies while donning the Paris colors, although his silver success didn’t increase his love of the game. Instead, a lack of playing time drove him to the brink.

The 46-strong Dutch international started only 17 games in Ligue 1 in his first season for the club, followed by 24 in the 2013/14 season, 22 in the 2014/15 season and finally only 16 in the 2015/16 season. before joining Fenerbahce and ending his playing career with Toronto FC after a brief stint at Cagliari.

Van der Wiel left PSG at the age of 28, which should have been the best years of his career, but he would only play 57 more professional games before being eliminated in 2020. Free agent for a year. And he has now announced that he has become disillusioned with the sport after his time in Paris.

He said Kick’t Net: “You end up in France with different players, different coaches, different tactics. I’ve arrived in a team full of stars, guys you often play with on the Playstation. I arrived as a young man with my eyes wide open and shook hands with them. It was crazy, really amazing.

“I received an offer to extend my contract for three years, but I decided not to extend it. I wasn’t very happy there. I haven’t always played. I wasn’t sure that I would play regularly.

“There were also a few incidents in my last season [2015-16] that got on my nerves. Serge Aurier’s live periscope video, for example, in which he talked about the trainer [Laurent Blanc] and me in particular, two or three days before an important Champions League game against Chelsea. He was punished for this.

“Everyone was texting me with ‘get ready, you are the one who’s going to play’. That was of course an opportunity for me. In the end, I didn’t even play. They put marquinhos in my position even though he is a central defender.

“There were difficult moments when you felt bad and said, ‘Guys, do you think I am so bad that I am second choice as right-back with a central defender in my position?’ It made me not stay there. To be honest, I was fed up with football back then. “
