Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui on Leeds United radar

Leeds United are pounding a bargain for Ajax right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

Noussair Mazraoui

After Noussair Mazraoui, 23, joined Ajax in 2006 as a nine-year-old, he rose to the club before joining the first team in the 2017/18 season. The following year proved to be his breakthrough with the Eredivisie, where he played 48 games in all competitions.

The Moroccan international has suffered from injury problems in recent years, with the result that he has only been limited to 46 games in the last two seasons. Mazraoui has started the new Eredivisie season in breathtaking form with four goals and two assists in eight appearances so far. He also provided a template in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old right-back is in the final year of his contract, which means Leeds United could negotiate with him in the January transfer window before moving as a free agent this summer. On the flip side, with Mazraoui linked to players like Arsenal and AS Roma, the Whites could be discussing a discounted January transfer.

Leeds United have a few additions to make in the winter window

After a brilliant return to the Premier League last year, Leeds United have struggled this season and are just two places above the relegation zone. The Yorkshire giants have managed to buy just one win in their seven games, which was at the expense of promoted Watford before the international break.

Marcelo Bielsa has strengthened his squad with some signings over the summer transfer window, but if he wants to fire Leeds to another top division spot in the first half, the club will definitely have to hire a few new players in January.

The whites want to recruit a new right-back

The Yorkshire club are looking for options to bolster their right-back position, with Luke Ayling being the only recognized right-back on the squad.

The 30-year-old Ayling has proven to be a key player for Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa, providing the squad with great energy, tactical versatility and a solid work ethic. However, the currently injured Englishman turned 30 in August.

While Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shackleton have been well represented as right-backs on several occasions, the lack of adequate reinforcement for Ayling and his age means Leeds will see a new right-back in the windows to come.

Noussair Mazraoui could be a bargain for Leeds United

Having conceded 14 goals in just seven games, Leeds surely needs to find an answer to his problems. Defense is an area that will require some investment, making Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui ideal for Elland Road.

The highly-rated Mazraoui appears to have left his injury worries behind and is doing his best at Ajax this season. At 23, he has extensive experience at the highest level, having played 113 games for the giants of the Eredivisie and 12 caps for Morocco. He has a long career ahead of him and just gets better with time, age and experience.

There have been obvious signs that Mazraoui has the potential to make a name for itself in a more competitive league than the Eredivisie. That being said, Leeds, who wrap up a raid on Ajax for their Moroccan right-back next year, could be a smart deal and pay off for their long-term plans under Marcelo Bielsa.
