Durham – United Women – Match report

In the 72nd minute it was the Reds who took the lead again thanks to a spectacular goal from substitute Ella Toone. Hayley Ladd held the ball brilliantly before putting it in the path of Toone, who shot her shot into the top corner.

But the hosts hit back again when a terrific free kick from Beth Hepple sailed past Sophie Baggaley and sparked cheer among the home fans.

At the level of play, according to the rules of the Continental Tires League Cup, the tie turned into a penalty shootout, in which the winner would win an additional point in the group standings.

Toone, Aoife Mannion, Ladd and Boe Risa and Durham’s top three shooters all scored their penalties before Becky Salicki took her shot far away, leaving Russo a chance to end the penalty shootout, which she duly took.
