Ian Fewtrell claims the top honours at the Liverpool & DAA Individual League

The sixth and final round of the Liverpool & District AA Individual League took place on Sunday, pegged from the ducks at Green Lane in Maghull back through towards Liverpool ending on the cricket pitch at Maghull. Once again this has been a superb series of matches organised by Mike Dickson who is the Match Secretary of the L&DAA and one which typically brought home on reflection just how difficult fishing can prove to be at this time of year.

The event has also showed everyone though just what our famous Liverpool lengths of the cut can offer in the way of sport in winter, as some cracking weights have also been evident even during the harshest of weather conditions. Winter fishing as we know it, is never something to be advised for the faint hearted. It can, especially in respect of the younger anglers, be something that can either make or even break one. As we know it, there will always be the days when each and every one of us has asked ourselves ‘why did we bother’?.

Sunday, with a slight drop in temperature on the previous day’s conditions, this one saw a match of two halves taking place as proved for many by the weight’s recorded on the scales. Winner on the day was Wigan MG stalwart and popular canal maestro Dave Walmsley. ‘Wompey’ as he’s affectionately known on the circuit, was pegged near the Shop Lane swing-bridge at Maghull where he had a great day’s fishing.

Anglers enjoy the hint of spring

No stranger towards winning way’s on the canal system’s around the region, Walmsley put together a fine net of roach for the top spot on the day for 8lb. Leigh man Anthony Lloyd, who is actually a member of Liverpool AS Match Group, put together another catch of Roach for 5.12.0 for second place. Manchester Shaun
