Ángel Di María scored one of the most important goals for the Argentina national team in recent years. The 2021 Copa América title at the Maracanã gave the team a good boost, but the 33-year-old emphasized the need to take it step by step.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker spoke with ESPN F90 (above HOW) on various topics related to the national team. One of the questions asked in the interview was how his teammate Lionel Messi finally wins an international trophy.
Di María was part of squads who lost a FIFA World Cup final to Germany in 2014 and two Copa America finals in 2015 and 2016.
“Now Messi is more spectacular, happier, looser. I’m very happy for him. I told my wife that when the national team isn’t the best in the world, it’s a thousand times worse to achieve something. His name comes first, ”said Di María.
“The one who comes out is the one with the greatest pressure. [Messi] yelled at the Monumental again, and I hugged him. Then he felt the recognition of the people, enjoyed the Copa America and let go of the little that remained in him.
Finally, Di María responded to the question of whether the Argentine national team can take the momentum from this summer to next year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It will likely be the last time Messi has a chance to win the competition considering he will be 35 when the tournament starts.
“It’s crazy because there are high-level teams in Europe. The Copa America gave us the security we needed. We kept on playing even though the ball didn’t go in, ”said Di María.
“We have to continue on this path and continue to win in this way. There are a lot of games to play in qualifying and that will help us to get stronger.
