The Baltimore Ravens finished second in the AFC North last season with an 11-5 record. But Lamar and Co. were eventually dismissed from the end zone through a great collective effort in defense of the Buffalo Bills in the Conference Championship.
Even so, the core of this current Baltimore unit is returning for 2021-22 and, led by the 2019 MVP in Jackson, they are a team that may be on the cusp of greatness.
The Las Vegas Raiders, on the other hand, narrowly missed a playoff birth last season, finishing 8-8 in a tough AFC West division that includes Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Coach Jon Gruden, now in his third year in office, knows that fans expect progress. So it will be interesting to see how the Raiders fare against such a rigorous test in Week 1 – a blowout is unlikely to go down well in LV!

Ravens vs Raiders preview
Derek Carr will once again be the man at the center of the Las Vegas Raiders. As a gunslinger, Carr always shows up, finishing last season with 4,103 yards; 27 TDs and 9 picks, despite operating from a lower offensive line, and though highly acclaimed rookie WR Henry Ruggs isn’t exactly setting the ground ablaze.
The challenge for the Raiders was to strengthen the roster around their six-year QB franchise. But has that War room successfully?
Well, most thought Jon Grudens Raiders were easily hit when he pulled OT Alex Leatherwood into 17th place on this year’s draft. It’s too early to say if the Alabama product will be able to hold its own against the Ravens line of scrimmage early on, and the lightning-fast QB could prove of paramount importance in today’s game, especially with the key component of the last season on the orienteering. Richie Incognito will likely miss LV
The inclusion of Kenyan Drake gives the Raiders one of the NFL’s better double strikes in running back. But the first part of that punch, Josh Jacobs, is questionable for tonight’s game, which means there’s no real upgrade there either – at least not for Week-1. Last season’s best recipient, Nelson Agholor, is also long gone – he joined the Patriots in the off-season: Agholor’s replacement, an aging ex-Raven, Willie Snead lV …
There are definitely some top sophomore rookies and talent entering the field for the Raiders as part of their defensive secondary, which will be great to see. But is the Raiders D anywhere near the standard of the Ravens? No. And offensively, it’s hard to say that this Raiders outfit looks better than last year.
Because of this, the Ravens still appear on paper to be the stronger of the two teams on paper, despite the injury crisis currently rocking Baltimore, in which rookie WR Rashod Bateman and RBs Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins dropped out for the season in quick succession last week. Especially when the replacement RBs Latavius Murray and Le’Veon Bell are ready to take off.
Ravens vs Raiders prediction
It’s hard to face the Ravens here: it’s the NFL, and as the Green Bay Packers discovered last night, nothing is ever set in stone. But the Ravens are looking better across the roster and since it’s Week 1 there isn’t much left to do.
Pluck for the hugely talented Ravens to get a win on the road at -197. And use this free player prop bet to bet on Jackson O18.5 Longest Rush.
