Today (Wednesday 15th September) the club released a training update for Newcastle United players.
Images released show Newcastle United players training at St James Park ahead of Leeds United on Friday night.
Today’s photos show 22 Newcastle United players in training hoping to recover from a terrible start to the season with four defeats and a lucky draw against Southampton in their first five games.
Under the text that was part of Wednesday’s photo gallery, the Newcastle United update included:
“Joe Willock and Ciaran Clark trained prior to visiting Leeds United on Friday night and they both appear to have recovered from the blows they suffered at Manchester United over the weekend.
Steve Bruce announced after the game that the pair, along with goalscorer Javier Manquillo, had been pushed off the pitch due to an injury at Old Trafford.
Another boost for Bruce, Ryan Fraser was also involved after an early return from his international appearance with Scotland earlier this month with an injury, while Allan Saint-Maximin smiled all over the place before practice – and smiled even more after a couple of stunning goals during the meeting.
Youngsters Elliot Anderson and Joe White were also featured in club photographer Serena Taylor’s latest photo gallery for nufc.co.uk.
The photos released by Newcastle United this Wednesday afternoon show the following 202 players from what we got to see:
Miguel Almiron, Elliot Anderson, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Ryan Fraser, Dwight Gayle, Mark Gillespie, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Joelinton, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Langley, Jamal Lewis, Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Fabian Schar, Joe White, Joe Willock, Freddie Woodman
However, that list of 22 includes four goalkeepers (Darlow, Woodman, Langley, Gillespie) and the two “younger ones” Anderson and White. A total of 16 senior outfield players remain, which can be seen in the official pictures.
When it comes to the ones missing from Wednesday’s training images, we found six that didn’t appear in any of the images.
Callum Wilson leads the missing persons together with Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Dubravka. Last week, Steve Bruce said he had no return date for this trio.
Arguably Newcastle’s best player on Saturday looks like Javier Manquillo won’t be involved against Leeds. While Paul Dummett is once again missing from the training photos, he will again be unavailable.
One surprise that is missing is Sean Longstaff. Unless the camera accidentally missed him, it looks like the midfielder could be a doubt for Leeds too.
Good news that Willock, Fraser and Clark are all now back in training and hopefully can take on Leeds if they are selected.
However, if at least those six other Newcastle United players are actually excluded, some for the foreseeable future, the NUFC roster doesn’t look particularly strong.
