Bastian Schweinsteiger described the Celtic Park as the “most impressive” atmosphere he has ever experienced on an away day in football.
The 121-strong German international played some of the game’s biggest games during his trophy-filled career, including Bayern Munich’s 2013 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium, Joachim Low’s 2014 World Cup winner in Maracana and the 2008 European Championship final against eventual winner Spain.
The former midfield maestro has played in the Juventus Stadium, Real Madrid’s Bernabeu, Barcelona’s Camp Nou, San Siro, Old Trafford, Anfield, the Johan Cruijff ArenA, and the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and many, many more, but none of them impressed him more than a certain floor in Parkhead.

Although Schweinsteiger did not have the pleasure of playing at Celtic’s famous stadium in the East End of Glasgow, he was actually present at the stadium when his Bayern Munich team competed in the 2003 Champions League against the Scottish club in which he took on the role of unused substitute as a goalless stalemate occurred.
Schweinsteiger was a precocious talent at the time who was still able to gain a foothold under the two-time Champions League winning coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who was unable to outsmart Martin O’Neill Bhoys that autumn evening in Glasgow, but despite the boring affair on the pitch, the off-field events left their mark on the young midfielder.
It won’t be a surprise to hear Schweinsteiger’s latest confirmation of the world-famous atmosphere of Celtic. Barcelona’s immortal Andres Iniesta recently recommended current Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi to join the club after his own experience at the stadium.
“I remember well,” said Iniesta of Barca’s notorious loss to Celtic during the Group stage of the 2012/13 Champions League.
“A goal from one corner and another on the counter. Football is wonderful for reasons like this – the team that has the ball or the better players don’t always win.
“I will never forget that I played against Celtic. The atmosphere is one of the best in the world. I was lucky enough to play there several times and it was always so intense.
“It was an honor to play in such an incredible amount of noise.”
Schweinsteiger has now thrown his weight behind Celtics decibel-nonetheless audience. During a Q&A on Twitter, he was asked by a fan: “What was the most impressive stadium atmosphere at away games?”
To which he replied: “Celtic Glasgow. That was impressive. “
