Newcastle United are aiming for a fall to Barcelona center-back Clement Lenglet in January.

The Northeast Premier League team last week confirmed the completion of the £ 300m acquisition by a Saudi Arabia-led consortium, ending Mike Ashley’s infamous 14-year ownership of the club. Despite coach Steve Bruce’s training on Tuesday, it is believed he is on the verge of losing his job at Newcastle United after a dismal start to the new top division.
While Newcastle’s board of directors continued to evaluate management options to replace Steve Bruce, there has been no shortage of players involved in moving to St James’ Park following the arrival of new owners. One of them is Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet.
Lenglet, 26, has been reduced to a bench role at Barcelona this season, although Ronald Koeman often plays with a back-three system. The French center-back fell into the pecking order after Eric Garcia arrived from Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer and has only started one of the Catalan club’s nine games.
The 26-year-old, who played 48 games last season, was linked with a move to AS Roma this summer but chose to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place. Newcastle have been watching the defender’s situation under Koeman this tenure and have already reached out to Barcelona to inquire about the likelihood of Lenglet signing when the January transfer window reopens.
Newcastle United are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements
Newcastle United are one of the four clubs without a win in the Premier League and they are rightly in the relegation zone. They would surely have to improve and score points if they are to hit the drop.
The Toon Army can certainly use some fresh faces this January to level up some areas of their roster. Newcastle’s defense has been shocking so far, with Bruce’s side conceding 16 goals in seven games. None of the players at the back have met their standards so signing a defender who is at the St.
Does Clement Lenglet fit in with the Toon Army?
Clement Lenglet, who has nearly 300 games for Nancy, Sevilla and Barcelona and a wealth of European experience, would be a great addition to any Premier League team fighting relegation this season.
Despite having suffered a dramatic fall from grace over the past 12-15 months, the Frenchman certainly has the résumé to come through the door of St James’ Park as an upgrade to the club’s existing center-back options. He’s a decent ball-playing defender who is proficient in the air and not that easy to beat at his speed. Being left-footed, the 26-year-old would be a straight upgrade to Ciaran Clark and would offer Newcastle a lot more defensive stability.
Lenglet’s defensive acumen and vast experience would go a long way in improving the coach’s overall squad dynamics. With he’s fallen from grace and looking to leave, Barcelona are unlikely to stand in the way of the France international. Indeed, the Spanish club’s financial troubles could result in the player being permanently sacked in the winter transfer window.
Either way, Newcastle will have to test Barcelona’s resolve with a cheeky offer for Lenglet when the transfer window reopens.
